This page explains where our numbers come from. It will grow as each tool ships; every tool links to its own section here.
Data sources
- NAVs: AMFI's daily NAV file (all schemes), with full history since 2006 from the public historical dataset, refreshed nightly.
- Scheme details: AMFI scheme master (category, ISINs, launch date, minimum amounts).
- Benchmarks: total return indices (TRI) from the index providers.
- Exchange rates: daily rates from Rates by Exchange Rate API (European Central Bank reference rates via frankfurter as a fallback), used only to show values in other currencies. Fund NAVs and calculator inputs stay in rupees.
- Inflation: India CPI from MOSPI / RBI, with the World Bank series as a fallback.
Every figure shows its "as of" date and source. If a source is late, we show the last good data and say so.
Returns
- Periods of one year or more use CAGR; periods under a year use absolute return.
- SIP returns use XIRR on the actual cash-flow dates.
- Funds younger than one year are shown with absolute return only and are left out of rankings.
- Rankings are factual: the metric and period used to sort are always shown.
- Regular plans are shown by default, with a Direct toggle and the cost difference.
Calculator conventions
By default "12% a year" means a 12% compound annual growth rate. We convert it to an effective monthly rate, (1 + r)1/12 − 1, and assume each SIP instalment is paid at the start of the month. Some other sites divide the yearly rate by 12 instead; that gives a slightly higher number. Each calculator lets you switch and shows which convention is in use.
| Convention | Value |
|---|---|
| r/12, payment at start of month | ₹11,61,695 |
| r/12, payment at end of month | ₹11,50,193 |
| Effective monthly rate, payment at start of month (our default) | ₹11,20,179 |
Backtests on real NAVs
- If a transaction date is a holiday, the next available NAV is used.
- Stamp duty of 0.005% is applied to purchases; units are rounded to 3 decimal places.
- SIP dates 29–31 are handled explicitly for shorter months; each tool states the rule it uses.
- No transactions are simulated before a fund's launch date.
Risk measures
Standard deviation, Sharpe and Sortino ratios, beta, alpha, maximum drawdown and up/down capture are computed from daily returns over three years against the scheme's benchmark. The riskometer is the level published by the AMC.
Tax
Post-tax views follow the Income-tax rules for the current tax year (equity STCG 20%, LTCG 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh after 12 months, and slab rate for specified debt funds bought on or after 1 April 2023). They are estimates; please confirm with a tax professional.
