Assumptions and method
Formula
- Employee: 12% of basic + DA; employer: 3.67% to EPF (or 12% − 8.33% of ₹15,000)
- Interest = Σ monthly running balance × rate / 12, credited at year end
Modelling notes
- Employee 12.00% of basic; employer 3.67% to EPF.
- Interest on the monthly running balance, credited at year end.
Not included
- Future rate revisions: the current rate is assumed for the whole term.
- Income tax on interest, where applicable.

How it works
The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) receives 12% of your basic salary + DA from you, and part of your employer’s 12% (the rest goes to the pension scheme, EPS).
Interest is calculated on the monthly running balance and credited at the end of each year. Add your expected salary growth to see the balance at retirement.
Frequently asked questions
How much of my employer’s share goes to EPF?
Typically 3.67% of basic. Where basic is above ₹15,000 and the employer contributes on actual salary, the EPF share is 12% minus 8.33% of ₹15,000 (₹1,250) per month.
Is EPF interest fixed?
No. EPFO declares the rate each year.
